    Abstract:
    * cash only
    * affordable
    * buy 12, get 2 free (year-round)
    * best Portuguese egg tarts in Philly (must-try)
    * open later than other bakeries in Chinatown

    Mong Kok Station feeds my pastry addiction. Whenever I know I'll have late nights at work, I get that deal and share these goodies with my colleagues. Everyone loved the pastries!

    If you can't decide what to get, I implore you to try the Portuguese egg tart. I prefer the Portuguese egg tart over the Hong Kong egg tarts. Portuguese egg tarts are creamier and sweeter than the Hong Kong egg tarts.

    I don't particularly stay in the shop, but I have seen the elderly Asian community hang around there and chat in the mornings. I love it. Makes me happy to see there's a place for everyone. It's bustling with conversation in the morning. You can feed off of that vibrant, energy.

    I'm growing fond of this place. Despite the red beans in the snow balls are sometimes... not fresh (This is partly my fault because I get them towards the end of the day. I suggest getting the red bean snow balls during the winter or first thing in the morning. Everything's prone to spoil faster during the summer, especially pastries due to its dairy contents) I still love this place. If they had pork buns in addition to the pastries, now, that would be a dream come true.

    Mong Kok Station is located in Chinatown, next door to L&L Lucky Market and across the street from Chubby Cattle. Look for the orange sign, you can't miss it.

    After having dinner nearby, I came here right before 9 pm, hoping to pick up a few baked goods for our road trip out to New Jersey the next day. There was a table of 4 young people in their 20's just sitting at a table at the end of the room. I waited a few minutes even though one of the girls saw me. My husband said I really should have walked out and I was about to until she got up and came over. She didn't even bother to greet me. It seemed like I was one the bothering her to get up from watching a show on her tablet with her friends to serve me (uh sorry for making you get off your butt and do your job....).

    I just pointed to a few things and then paid. I found out later that she ended up overcharging me $0.13. Even though that's not much, it makes me wonder how many other people she has overcharged and tells you that this place is dishonest.

    Anyways, I ended up buying:

    Lotus Cake, $1 prior to tax- Pretty standard, was pretty flaky. Made perfectly.

    Banana Walnut Bread, $1 prior to tax- Had a good texture/ crumb. The bread was not too sweet but you could taste that banana and went well with the walnuts. Moist and a good size.

    Peanut sesame, $0.80 prior to tax- This mochi dessert was sweet and tasty but rather messy. Inside was peanut pieces that I would best describe as shreds like dried coconut flakes (if that makes sense). I had thought the filling would be more of a paste but it wasn't and end up getting on my clothes. The mochi itself had a great chew and also had powdered sugar on it. This was a nice dessert that wasn't too sweet.
    ------------------------
    (Total= Should have been $3.02 with tax but I was charged $3.15 instead)

    Even though the service was non existent, I was surprised with the quality of the items I purchased. I consumed these items over the next few days and were not stale. They tasted like they were made fresh.

    But regardless of the taste of these items that I purchased, I wouldn't step foot back in there. I am sure if I had come when there was perhaps an older employee (like the mama or grandma, assuming this is a family business), I probably would have at least gotten a tad bit better service (let's jut be honest, Chinese people aren't known giving great customer service and young people are known to prefer to keep their eyes glued to their mobile devices than to work).

    If service like this doesn't deter you, then by all means, come by here. But don't expect anyone to acknowledge you and be sure to calculate your total with tax correctly so no one cheats you.

    Such a disappointment.,

    Egg Tart: 4/5.  Not too sweet, which is what it is supposed to be.  They don't keep them warm.  It's only good when it's warm!

    Portuguese Tart: 3/5.  It's just like egg tart with a bit more sugar.  No, that's not how it is!

    Durian Tart: 0/5.  A V O I D ! ! !  It's like sand paper with fake durian paste.

    Melon Cake: N/A . I was so looking forward to it, so I ordered it, but they didn't put it in the bag!   UGH!!!!!!

    Melon cake!  Melon cake!  I want my melon cake!  ~》_《~

    I would only be back for the Melon Cake IF AND ONLY IF I happen to be in the area.

    Do not recommend this bakery. I went to several bakeries and got the same items, found out this one was the worst. I bought several small items and none of them tasted good. They tasted like old and not fresh, most of them I only took one bite and threw them away.

    Fellow yelpers, I will begin my review with this: Today, 3/9/19, my friends and I did "The Egg Tart Challenge". This was Bakery stop #3 of 7.

    First off, a little personal note- I don't eat alot of sugar. So my body was slowly reaching ketoacidosis (google it) and insulin is now in small supply.
    Nevertheless, as our leader Alice pointed out, it is the egg tart CHALLENGE---i needed to get my head in the game.

    The place was very busy! We had to ask someone to share their table!! Mostly locals inside but it was booming with activity!

    We sampled their Egg Tart and their Portuguese Egg Tart. Their Egg tart ($0.80)was not our favorite. It did not have much flavor and the crust did fall off. This was also served cold.

    However- the Portuguese Egg tart ($1.00) was AMAZING. The charred top was welcomed to my palate and exploded with all of the flavors inside the tart (hello more sugar!). This is the only stop where we found Portuguese Egg Tart by the way.

    Pork Bao (as is with many asian pastries) the meat to carb ratio was off. But when bitten correctly, Mong Kok delivered! I loved this Pork Bao.

    Ha Cheung (rice noodles with shrimp and also beef) was great. Good temperature, the dumpling sauce was a great addition, and the proteins were in good ratio.

    Mong Kok is the place to be!
